This
two piece Confederate script infantry coat button is in very good
condition and was excavated from northern VA. It has a chocolate
brown patina and a well defined script letter "I" on the face. There
is a slight push just to the left center of the "I". The
back mark of "S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & Co / LONDON / 71 JERMYN. ST" is visible
and the shank is bent but

This non-excavated US infantry button is in very good condition. The
front shows an eagle with the letter "I" in the shield and the eagle
clutching an olive branch in his right talons and arrows in his left.
The rear has a back mark of "Scovills Co. Waterbury" and a secure shank
which is bent over. The button has no pushes, cracks, breaks, or

Confederate Script Artillery Button
This brass two piece excavated Confederate script artillery button is in
good condition and was recovered Richmond, VA. The button's face has a
brown greenish patina with no pushes and shows moderate ground action.
There is some brass showing through depending on the lighting used to view
the button. The rear has a mild push with no discernable back mark
though it may have had one at one time. The slightly loose shank is
present and attached. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
This button displays nicely and will make a nice addition to any general
relic collection. Approximately 23 mm.

Confederate Artillery Button - Brass Back
This brass two piece excavated Confederate Roman "A" artillery button with
brass back is in very good condition. These buttons were crudely made
to begin with and this one is no different. The button's face has a
dirty brown greenish patina showing period wear and tear with very minimal
ground action. At the 2 o'clock position there is a line but I am of
the opinion that this is a manufacturing flaw and not a crack. The
blank brass rear is in good condition and has a leaning shank which is
secure. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs. This button
displays beautifully and will make a nice addition to any Confederate button
collection.

Confederate Infantry Button - Richmond
A beautiful
excavated brass Confederate two piece Infantry coat button with the "E.M.L &
C./ Richmond, Va." back mark. The shank is solidly attached and nearly
straight up. The back mark lettering is very readable and the button face is
slick with a very nice chocolate brown patina. This is a very nice dug
button with no cracks, breaks, pushes or repairs.

This excavated two-piece brass Connecticut state seal button is in fair
condition and was recovered near Vicksburg, MI. The face of this
button has a push and about 35% gold wash still remaining. The rear
has a minor push and a partially legible back mark of " * SCOVILL MF'G CO. *
/ WATERBURY." dm. The shank is secure and nearly straight up.

South Carolina State Seal Button
This excavated two-piece brass South Carolina state seal coat button is in
very good condition. Overall, the button has an even brown patina with
traces of gold gilt in and around the palmetto tree. There is a tiny
push to the mid to lower right side of the face but is hardly noticeable.
The rear is in very good condition and has the partially legible back mark
of " *** YOUNG . SMITH & CO *** / NEW YORK" dm. The shank is
secure and straight up and this button will be a nice addition to any
excavated button collection.

US Artillery Button
This excavated two piece US artillery coat button is a very nice looking
example and was recovered from Dalton, GA. The face has plenty of gold
gilt beautifully highlighting the eagle and letter "A" within the shield.
There are two pushes to the button with one small one to the lower section
of the eagle's right wing and the other on the rear at the base of the
shank. The shank is present on the rear along with a back mark of
". CANFIELD BRO & Co. / BALTIMORE". The button has no cracks, breaks,
or repairs and will make an excellent display piece for any relic
collection.

A very nice
example of an excavated one piece solid cast infantry coat button.
Recovered in Manassas, VA., this button is cast from bronze and shows a
plain Roman "I" with no back mark. The shank is a drilled wedge type and
the button's face has a very pleasing chocolate brown patina. The
button has no cracks, breaks, or repairs. This example will make an

This two piece
Confederate lined cavalry coat button is in very good condition.
It has an overall dark brown patina with areas of ashen grey soil residue in
various areas. The rear has a secure shank which leans to one side
along with a blank back mark. The high resolution digital picture of this
button makes it appear rougher than it actually is. In hand, you will find
this button to be quite pleasing. There are no pushes, cracks, breaks or

two-piece Navy cuff button is in overall decent condition. The button's
structure is solid with a strong rust encrusted back and shank. It's face
shows an eagle, surrounded by stars, clutching an anchor. This button
was recovered by the late James Renfrow Sr. at Harrison's Landing in Charles
City County, VA. James was a hunting buddy of the renowned relic hunter

This excavated Vermont militia two piece coat button was recovered from Cold
Harbor, VA. and is in very good condition. The face has a very pleasing golden brown patina.
There is a fine layer of gold wash still covering most of the lined
background which beautifully highlights the still sharp details of the state
seal, letters in VERMONT and stars. The rear, with the back mark of
"*SCOVILL MF'G CO. * / WATERBURY" rmdc, has a slight push and a solidly
attached leaning shank. This is an excellent excavated example that is
typically difficult to find available. It has no cracks, breaks,

Wisconsin State Arms Cuff Button
This two piece Wisconsin cuff button is in very good condition and was
recovered in the from Berkley Plantation in Charles City County, VA.
The button front has plenty of gold wash still remaining and shows the the
Wisconsin State Arms which was designed in 1851 by Govenor Nelson Dewey and
Edward Ryan while sitting on the front steps of a New York City bank.
The design consists of a plow for agriculture, an anchor for trade, an arm
grasping a hammer for manufacturing and a crossed shovel and pick
representing mining all within a shield in the center of the button
supported by a sailor and an yeoman. The crest is a badger with the
motto "FORWARD" on a streamer above. Below the shield are a cornucopia
and a pyramid of pig lead. The rear has a solidly attached shank which
is nearly straight up and a difficult-to-read back mark believed to be that
of "* EXTRA * / QUALITY" dm. This button has no cracks, breaks, bends
or repairs and will make a fine addition to any button collection.

Pennsylvania National Guards Button
This excavated National Guards coat button is covered in gold gilt and is
very good condition. The shank is present, secure and straight up.
The back mark is that of "*W.G. MINTZER*/ PHILA." The button has no
pushes, cracks or bends. The rim is complete with the exception of a
minor opening which is
only visible from the lateral view and not from the front or rear. The
rim in this area is still completely connected to either side of the opening
and is solidly in place. The
button was recovered in the early 1970's from Berkeley Plantation in
Charles City County, VA. An article titled "The Elusive Insignia
of Philadelphia's "National Guards" by Bruce Bazelon, found on page 23 in
the North South Trader's Civil War magazine, Vol. XXIII No. 2, pictures an
example of this type button but with a slightly different back design. A copy of this article will accompany this button.
This button will display beautifully in any button collection.

A stunning example of a coat size Confederate pewter cast infantry button.
This excavated button, with its beautiful grey patina, was excavated in the
Winchester, VA area. The face of the button is flawless with the "I"
encircled by remaining soil along the rim and slightly around the letter
itself. The rear has a stand up wire shank, no back mark and is in
excellent condition. This button has no cracks, breaks, bends or
repairs and is museum quality.

North Carolina State Seal Button
This excavated North Carolina "local" coat button showing the state seal was
manufactured by W. Wildt & Son of Richmond, VA. The back mark is blank
and the shank, drilled from sheet metal, is present and nearly straight up. Even
though these buttons were crudely produced from poor quality metal they are
still very attractive. North Carolina is
spelled out around the upper edge and the two female figures on the front,
"Liberty" and "Plenty", can still be easily seen. This very attractive
button was recovered by Dennis Irvin of Fauquier County, VA during the late
seventies into the early eighties. During that time Mr. Irvin hunted
many Civil War sites in Fauquier and surrounding counties. Ref.
