This 1.5 inch iron canister shot was recovered in Petersburg, VA in the 1960's by Grayson Morris of Hopewell, VA. The iron is in excellent condition, has minimal pitting, a very visible mold seam, a visible sprue, and an offset casting. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", this canister shot is very likely Confederate made given its crudeness of manufacture. Due to this crudeness its diameter measurement varies from 1.46 to 1.53. This canister shot would have been fired from a 12 pounder cannon and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
