Item: Federal 3-Inch Parrott Case-Shot Artillery Shell with Scarce Brass Band Sabot
Cannon: 3-Inch Parrott Rifle
Approximate diameter: 2.94 inches
Approximate length: 8-1/2 inches
Approximate weight: 11.4 pounds
Fuzing: Zinc fuze adaptor for paper time fuze.
Sabot: Brass band
Condition: Very good, excavated, fired. There is minimal surface pitting and old black paint. Its fuze adaptor and sabot are both present. A very small portion of the nose rim is missing due to shell impact and a small break in the sabot as indicated in the additional images. It has been deactivated and there are no repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", not many of these shells were manufactured as the sabot would not expand into the cannon's rifling. Also, 3-inch Parrott rifles were not accepted into Federal service until February 1864 and were referred to as the model 1863 Parrott rifle due to the change in bore diameter. The model 1861 Parrott rifle was 2.9-inch in caliber. This example will be an excellent addition to any Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
