Comments: This is one of the largest artillery shells used during the American Civil War. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", its brass body Parrott Navy model percussion fuse is indeed, not only a rare find, but also its presence indicates that it was highly likely fired from a US Naval ship. He also explained that the brass body fuse was used by the Navy instead of the zinc fuse, used by the Army. Both the zinc-bodied and brass-bodied fuses contained a zinc slider. It was determined that the brass body fuse lessened the likelihood of the slider becoming gummed-up by exposure to corrosive salt air at sea that had occurred when using the zinc fuse. The wood stand shown in the additional images is included. This massive shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
