Item: US Navy 15 Inch Shell Fragment
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 14.4 pounds.
Condition: Solid, excavated, with very light pitting on its exterior. The digger marked this item with his collection inventory number in black ink on a white background.
Recovered: North side of James River off Old Kingsland Road, Henrico County, VA
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the shell, this huge fragment was a part of, was originally fired from a 15 inch cannon situated on a US Navy iron clad in the James River. This relic was acquired directly from the family of the now deceased digger who hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia for several decades. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
