24-Pounder Case-Shot Shell with Bormann Time Fuze Remnants

Item: Federal 24-Pounder Case-Shot Shell
Gun: 24-pounder smoothbore, 5.82-inch caliber.
Fuzing: Bormann time fuze (missing).
Approximate size: Weight: 22 pounds. Diameter: 5.68 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, deactivated. The surface of the shell has minimal pitting and has not been coated. Its iron under plug is visible within the fuze hole. No repairs and ready for display.
Recovered: Unknown.
Reference: Similar 24-pounders, both shell and case-shot, with Bormann fuzes is pictured in:

  • "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Thomas S. Dickey and Peter C. George on page 35.

See above page in the additional images.

Comments:  24-pounder Bormann fuzed case-shot shells are less common than 12-pounder examples and this example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
