Item: 3.67 Inch Caliber Type I Hotchkiss Shell - Nose and Base Only
Construction: Cast iron.
Fuzing: Wood drive-in adaptor for paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 8.4 pounds. Diameter: 3.59 inches. Length: 6-1/2 inches.
Condition: Good, excavated, fired, deactivated. The iron shows minimal pitting, is lightly clear coated, and is missing its lead sabot. Still visible on the base are a few of the cast-in letters of "HOTCHKISS PAT. OCT9, 1855". See additional images for several base views of these letters.
Recovered: Page County, VA
Comments: This shell would have been fired from a rifled six pounder smoothbore cannon. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
