This example of .69 caliber buck & ball was reconstructed to demonstrate its original appearance within a paper cartridge. According to Jim and Dean Thomas' bullet reference book, "A Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges", "The buckshot was added to the .69 caliber round ball in order to increase the chances of hitting a target when fired from the highly inaccurate smoothbore musket." When these cartridges were originally assembled, the buckshot simply rested on the round ball. This buck and ball will be an excellent example to add to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
