Item: .69 Caliber "Raleigh" Pattern Bullet (aka. Garibaldi)
Condition: Excellent, excavated, unfired. The bullet's surface has a white patina and a visible mold seam. Nice round skirt with uneven wall thickness due to off center mold casting.
Recovered: Charles City County, VA.
Approximate size: .689-inch diameter; 1.11-inch length; 533 grains weight.
Reference: Similar examples can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:
See above pages in additional images.
Comments: This bullet was acquired directly from the digger and what I appreciate most about this bullet is the presence of the off-center mold casting which is, yet another example of the manufacturing imperfections typically found with Confederate products. These bullets were manufactured in .54, .58, & 69 caliber. According to the above-mentioned reference book, "Round Ball to Rimfire, Part Four", by Dean Thomas, they were "made at the N.C. Institute for the Deaf & Dumb and the Blind". This bullet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
