This excavated 15 inch spherical shell Navy fragment was recovered from the Port Walthall area of Chesterfield County, VA. The fragment measures approximately 5-7/8 x 4 x 2-3/4 inches. The last measurement of 2-3/4 inches is the shell's wall thickness. This was indeed a huge shell, as this fragment alone weighs approximately 7 pounds. Given its recovery location area, it is believed that it was fired from a navy monitor type ironclad ship during the Richmond to Petersburg siege. This large Navy shell fragment will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
