Ames Artillery Saber and Scabbard Dated 1861

This Model 1840 Type II light artillery saber dated 1861 was manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts and were manufactured for Federal light artillery mounted units. This variation was made from 1860 through 1865 and features a saber that has a flush handguard on the blade side without a recess and its matching scabbard has a throat collar mount similar to the M1860 cavalry model.
Overall, both saber and scabbard are in very good condition. The guard, grip, pommel and blade are all firmly attached to each other with no play. The grips, which narrow toward the pommel, are missing its wrap and twisted brass wire. Its original leather washer is no longer present; however, a replacement leather washer has been added. Both brass handguard and pommel have a slight dull brass patina and were likely polished at some point. Neither guard nor pommel have any markings. The saber (without scabbard) overall length measures approximately 37-1/8 inches. Its curved blade length measures approximately 31-7/8 inches with a blade width of 1-1/4-inch. Its curved blade has a predominantly light sheen with dark a few dark areas with nearly no nicks.
Visibly marked on the ricasso is “U.S. / G.G.S / 1861” with initials "G.G.S." representing Ordnance Department Inspector, George G. Saunders. The reverse ricasso is very lightly marked in three lines “AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS”.
The original matching steel scabbard has acquired a very pleasing even brown patina. The throat collar is the appropriate style for the Type II. While both mounts are present, the rings are missing. There is a very minor dent on one side approximately eight inches below the bottom mount. Its drag is in very good condition. The blade fits quite well into the scabbard; however, it should be mentioned that the final 2-3 inches of blade insertion requires more pressure with the same for blade extraction.
This finely crafted Ames light artillery saber will be an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapon or general relic collection.
