These eight pieces of artillery shrapnel were acquired directly from the digger who hunted various Civil War battle sites in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the 1960s & 70s. The majority of the pieces are from a Hotchkiss shell. There are seven iron pieces and one lead sabot portion. Every piece exhibits certain characteristics identifying them from exploded Civil War artillery shells and not just plain hunks of iron. One piece in particular with fuze threads. The pieces range from 3-3/4 to 4-1/2 inches in length. The total weight of the group is 6.4 pounds. They will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
