This US model 1855 saber bayonet may or may not be excavated and was, at some point in time, cut down to a perfect side-knife size. The brass handle has a very pleasing aged brown patina while the brass guard displays a lighter brownish-green patina. The flat side of the handle is stamped "D", "47", believed to represent company D, 47th regiment. There is also a small letter "L" representing an inspector's' mark. The dark iron blade is very stable and shows some surface pitting. This relic weighs nearly 1 1/2 pounds and is approximately 11 1/8 inches in overall length. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War weapon, bayonet, or general relic collection.
