This excavated entrenching tool was made from a socket bayonet and was recovered from the Fredericksburg, VA area. It measures approximately 5 inches from the top of the socket to the tip of the flattened blade. The socket length is approximately 3 inches and approximately 3-1/2 inches of the blade has been hammered into a digging tool. The iron is stable and in good solid condition. Included in the additional images are pages from the following Civil War relic reference books that show similar entrenching tools made from bayonets:
"Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 78, items 2 & 3.
"Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips, page 164, item 1.
"Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia Volume I" by Francis A. Lord, page 143.
This excavated entrenching tool will be an excellent addition to any Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
