This non-excavated heavy artillery stirrup is in excellent condition and is stamped on the underside of the foot rest with the letters "US", "Watervliet Arsenal N.Y" and "P.V.H.". The "P.V.H" stamp represents the inspector's initials. It is constructed of solid cast brass and is weighs approximately 1.2 pounds. The brass has a very pleasing dull yellow-brass patina and the stamped letters are bold all visible. A similar example of this stirrup can be found #5 on page 137 in the book "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard R. Crouch. This stirrup has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War artillery, campsite, or general relic collection. Approximately 4 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches.
