Navy Parrott Sabot from Fired 30 Pounder Shell

SOLD

This excavated navy Parrott sabot, from a fired 30 pounder artillery shell, was acquired directly from the family of a farmer who recovered it on his property which is adjacent to the Appomattox River and within 2 miles of the Petersburg battlefield. It is constructed of cast brass which has aged into a nice looking woodsy-green patina. Though bent, the sabot is a complete ring that clearly shows the five lands and grooves created by the rifling of the tube of a 30 pounder Parrott cannon upon firing. Included in the additional images is page 279 from Jack Bell's "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance" that shows an example of a the type shell that this sabot would have been fitted with. Also from the 1993 edition of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Thomas S. Dickey and Peter C. George, is page 214 providing additional information regarding this type sabot. The sabot available in this listing is in good solid condition and has not been repaired. It measures approximately 5 inches in diameter at its widest point due to its irregular shape. This artillery relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
