This brass spike was recovered on the Appomattox River shoreline in Petersburg, VA just below a farm where many Civil War artillery shells and other relics were recovered. The brass has aged into a very pleasing deep green patina. It was included in a group of Civil War artillery relics recently acquired by Virginia Relics and may have been part of a ship, barge, or wharf in the area. While I cannot definitively say what period it is from, it is indeed an interesting relic of the past. The measurement at about the mid-section of the spike is approximately 5/16 x 5/16 inches and its length is approximately 4 5/8 inches.
