British sabers of this pattern, with all iron parts, were brought into the South through the Federal blockade in limited numbers. Some these weapons have a known Confederate affiliation. This edged weapon has a 34-1/2 inch blade with a slight curve and unstopped fuller. The blade has a dark aged smooth patina with areas of the original bright finish showing through. The pressed leather grips are checkered with five rivets holding them to the tang of the blade. The grips show slight discoloration on their sides, and there is some deterioration on the edges. The unusual iron hand-guard, with three branches, has an integral pommel cap and a decorative quillon. The long curved scabbard is complete with throat, two bands with attachment rings and drag. The sword fits very snug into the scabbard. Overall this sword and scabbard with its even dark patina on all parts, with the exception of the blade, which has been protected by the scabbard, would be considered to be in very good "attic relic" condition. It will be an excellent addition to any Civil War sword, edged weapon, or general relic collection.
