Comments: When these cartridges were originally assembled, the buckshot simply rested on the round ball, they were not fuzed together. The example offered in this listing fuzed together overtime while in the ground and was recovered as such. It is not a reconstructed example as many are. It was acquired directly from the digger, Robert Braswell, Jr. of Gaston, NC who recovered many fine relics from both North Carolina and Virginia over several decades. Learn more about Robert and his relic detecting by clicking on his name above. According to Jim and Dean Thomas' bullet reference book, "A Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges", "The buckshot was added to the .69 caliber round ball in order to increase the chances of hitting a target when fired from the highly inaccurate smoothbore musket." This buck and ball will be an excellent example to add to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
The above description, along with an image of this particular relic, will be printed on Virginia Relics letterhead and will also be included.
