This excavated bugle mouthpiece is in good condition and has a very pleasing light green patina. It was acquired directly from the digger's nephew who recovered it from Harrison's Landing in Charles City County, VA. Harrison's Landing is located along the James River where General George McClellan camped during the summer of 1862 after the battle of Malvern Hill. Interestingly, it was at Harrison's Landing that "Taps", the military bugle call to sleep, was composed by General Daniel Butterfield. A similar example can be found in "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 37, item 3. A scan of this page is included in the additional image of this relic. This difficult to recover relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
