It is estimated that 5,000 were manufactured. Many of the 50 caliber types were Federal purchases prior to the war.
Flayderman continues regarding: "Southern State Purchases. There were sufficient purchases of this First Model by Southern states in the immediate months preceding the Civil War to actually to include the gun in 35 and 50 in their later issued Confederate ordnance manuals as an official weapon. The Mass. Arms Co., taking advantage of the crisis, made great efforts to dispose of their large inventory and were able to sell and deliver sizable quantities. Known purchases: to state of Mississippi 325 carbines in 50 cal. and 300 in 35 cal. To the state of Florida 1000 carbines in 35 cal. To the state of Georgia 650 in 50 cal. Approximately 800 (calibers unknown; likely mixed) were sold to various militia outfits in South Carolina and Louisiana while small quantity purchases to most other southern states in those hectic months."
