Here we have a .69 caliber 3-ring bullet which struck the rear of what appears to be another .69 caliber 3-ring bullet. It is my theory that the first bullet fired had already landed with the 2nd bullet then subsequently striking it. The bullets were fused together from the force and heat upon impact. I suspect, while rarely occurring, it would not be surprising for one fired bullet to follow another fired to the same intended or unintended target. During my analysis of this piece, I observed that it weighed slightly under 3 ounces. I then weighed two "dropped" or unfired .69 caliber 3-ring examples and observed their weight at 3 ounces. The slight difference in weight is likely due to minimal lead loss during firing and impact. In the additional images of this piece, the 3 rings, while disfigured, appear to be visible above the round base of the skirt of the second or "follow" bullet. The digger didn't clean this piece, as he prefers to leave them alone once recovered, but more gentle cleaning may reveal more information. This rare and interesting struck bullet find was recovered in Culpeper, VA and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
