Burnside Carbine - New Market

SOLD

Item: Excavated Burnside Carbine - New Market
Condition:
Good, excavated. Solid shape with no loose parts and a five-digit serial number "3756_". Most of the gun's hardware remains, to include the 21-inch barrel with front and rear sites, frame, lock plate and hammer, loading and finger levers, trigger and trigger guard. Stamped on top of the receiver in three horizontal lines is "BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25, 1856 / 3756_" (the last serial number is difficult to determine). The stamp on the lock is difficult to discern but believed to be "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDENCE = R.I.". Missing hardware includes the butt plate, sling ring and bar, rear sling hook and a portion of the barrel band with sling hook. Approximately 1-3/8 x 3-3/4-inch section of the forward end of its Walnut wood stock remains above the trigger guard, however the rest of the stock and forend are missing. Some wood remains between the barrel and the barrel band. It has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron and is ready for display. No repairs.
Recovered: New Market, VA area.
Approximate overall length: 29-3/8 inches
Reference: A similar example of an excavated Burnside carbine is pictured in the following relic reference book:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 87, items 1 & 2.

See above page in the additional images.

Comments: Recovering a Civil War firearm is a very rare occurrence and for many diggers, a lifelong dream that never materializes. This Burnside carbine was recovered sometime after 2004 from a creek which explains why its iron components have remained in such remarkable condition. It has been beautifully preserved and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm or general relic collection.
