Item: Cast Soft Metal Coat Button - Water Find
Backmark: None
Design: Floral
Construction: Flat, one-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure open shank present. The soft metal is likely pewter which now has an overall grey patina. Though I am not completely sure, the button may have been very lightly clear coated so as to preserve it. The rear has a visible mold seam and while the shank is present, it is not a closed loop. No cracks, bends or repairs.
Recovered: Pamunkey River, New Kent County, VA.
Comments: This fine button was acquired directly from the Virginia digger's family. It will include its clear button case with the digger's label indicating its provenance and other information as seen in the additional images. An image of the button and its description will also be included with the purchase of this button. The digger hunted Civil War trails, campsites, and battle sites throughout central Virginia and adjacent states for several decades. Non-military buttons of this type, and other types are recovered at Civil War sites along with other Civil War military relics. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated button or general relic collection.
