This lead smoking pipe is one of the coolest field-made relics I have encountered. According to the digger's typed label it was recovered April 7, 1969, from Camp Bartow, WV. It has a very pleasing dirty white patina with no damage other than being slightly out of round which would be expected for a field manufactured item. It measures approximately 1-1/2 inches in length and the bowl is 1-inch in height. It weighs 1.53 ounces.
Reference: Examples of similar field-made smoking pipes are pictured and described in the following reference book:
See above pages in additional images.
This pipe was acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded the harmonica's date and location of recovery. The digger's label will be included. This will be an excellent opportunity to add a very nice personal item to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
