Item: Confederate 3-Inch Bourreleted Read Shell
Construction: Cast iron with copper fuze-plug/adaptor and copper ring sabot.
Fuzing: Paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 7.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 7.5 inches.
Condition: Very good, fired, excavated. Its copper fuze-plug and copper sabot are present and both with a darkening copper patina. Its iron body has minimal surface pitting, a strong mold seam, and a base chip (see Comments below) just above the sabot which is typical for this type of fired Read shell. The sabot shows six lands and grooves as a result of the rifling found inside the 3-inch rifle. A lathe dimple is present on the bottom of the base and printed there by the digger in faded gold marker is "MT. JACKSON VA". The shell has been deactivated and has no repairs. It has also been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron and is ready for display.
Recovered: Mount Jackson, VA.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "base chipping was the result of the over-expansion of its thick copper sabot." This artillery shell was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
