Excavated Confederate Boyle and Gamble Saber Bayonet with Scabbard Throat

SOLD

Item: Excavated Confederate Boyle and Gamble Saber Bayonet with Scabbard Throat
Construction: Brass and iron.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The cast brass ribbed hilt and brass scabbard throat have a very pleasing dusty-green patina, are solidly affixed, and undamaged. Portions of the lock-pin and spring are still present. Stamped on the underside of the guard arm, opposite the socket is either the Arabic numeral "1" or the Roman numeral "I". Its iron blade has surface and edge wear but is in remarkably solid condition for having been in the elements for over 100 years. The blade's fuller is present. Minor rust flaking may occur when handled. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Grapevine Bridge area, Henrico County, VA.
Approximate size: 24-5/8 inches overall length; 19-5/8 inches blade length.
Comments: The fact that the scabbard throat is still in place indicates that the blade was in the leather scabbard when left behind. Unfortunately, its brass drag just wasn't recovered. This rare example of an excavated Boyle & Gamble, Confederate, saber bayonet was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bayonet, weapon or general relic collection.
