Comments: While excavated "Cast I" buttons are readily available, non-excavated examples are rare. According to its former owner, a collector, this button "turned up in a button jar in an antique store in Savannah, GA many years ago". For several reasons, these buttons are one of my favorite relics of the Civil War. Its simplicity in design, its weight, and manufacturing crudeness, make a very attractive and thoroughly Confederate produced and used button. They were made to last and, what I find most appealing about this particular example, is its manufacturing crudeness as is visible on its front and shank. This non-excavated Confederate Infantry button is a beautiful example and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
