Confederate “D” Guard Bowie Knife with Scabbard

SOLD

This large blacksmith made Confederate “D” guard Bowie knife with wooden grip has a pike style, spear point double edge blade and leather scabbard. While the blade is slightly shorter than the scabbard, the fit is perfect. The plain flat hand guard is constructed of wrought iron with a nut connecting it to the knife’s tang. The wood grip has a crack which runs almost the full length of the wood with a smaller one inch crack on the other side however it remains solidly intact on the tang of the blade. The blade is smooth with some dark spots mixed with a greying patina. It may have been cleaned in the not so distant past. The scabbard, with belt loop, is in untouched original condition. The hand threading is original and nearly 100% intact. It shows use and clearly has the appearance of an 150 year old leather artifact with some cracking. On the upper edge of the scabbard approximately 7 inches from the tip is a 2 ¼ inch slice in the leather and another 1 ¼ inch area of edge separation beginning at the throat. One outstanding feature of the scabbard are the letters ”WHA” which were carved on the belt loop side and presumably the initials of the soldier that carried this knife. According to its accompanying paperwork, this knife and scabbard "was found in an old house near Livingston, Texas about 40 miles northeast of Houston." The overall length of the knife and scabbard, is approximately 18 ¾ inches, the overall knife length, not in scabbard, is approximately 17 ¼ inches, scabbard length is approximately 14 inches, the blade length is approximately 12 ½ inches, the blade thickness, at blade mid-point, is approximately .227 inches, its blade width at the ricasso is approximately 1 ¾ inches, its maximum blade width is approximately 1 ¾ inches. This Confederate “D” guard Bowie knife will be an excellent addition to any Civil War knife or general relic collection. SOLD
