Design:
 The front shows vignettes with "Justice" in the middle. The note is hand numbered and signed in black ink. Printed on the note is "FUNDABLE IN EIGHT PER CENT STOCK OR BONDS OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA / Six Months after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and the United States, / The Confederate States of America / Will pay FIVE DOLLARS to Bearer. / Richmond, September 2, 1861. / Southern Bank Note Company. New Orleans / RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES EXCEPT EXPORT DUTIES". The rear is blank.
Approximate size: 3 x 7 inches.
Condition:
 Good. Cut-out canceled. The soft paper has 3-4 pinholes, creasing, and uneven and missing borders. Minor upper right corner damage. Numbers and letters in pencil are present on the rear.

Comments: According to "Confederate States of America Paper Money", by Grover C. Criswell, "The type 31 was the last of the 1861 notes printed by the American Bank Note Company office in New Orleans, but ostensibly by the Southern Bank Note Company, New Orleans." This original Confederate five dollar note will be an excellent addition to any Civil War note or general relic collection.
