Item: Confederate Frame Waist Belt Buckle
Construction: Cast brass.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass has a dusty deep green patina. There is minor bending from period use but no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Near Stephens City, VA
Approximate size: 63 x 72mm.
Comments: This belt plate is an excellent example exhibiting crudeness of manufacture typically found in Confederate made products. According to Lon W. Keim, M.D., author of "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates", these buckles were "perhaps the most reliable of all Civil War accoutrement plates. Without movable parts or soldered hooks, these sturdy plates were virtually impervious to the rigors of field wear." Included in the additional images is a portion of page 165 from the above mentioned reference book which shows a similar example as figure 256. Dr. Keim's massive Confederate buckle book is no longer in print and copies are difficult to find however, one is available on this website. Click here to see this available copy.
This Confederate frame belt buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
