Item: Confederate 24 Pounder Coehorn Mortar Shell
Gun: 24-pounder Coehorn mortar, 5.82 inch caliber
Fuzing: Wooden adaptor for paper time fuze
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 16 pounds. Diameter: 5.63 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, with moderate pitting. The well preserved wood fuze adaptor is present. The tong holes, to either side of the fuze hole, indicate Confederate manufacture. The shell has been cleaned, lightly clear coated, and deactivated.
Recovered: Petersburg, VA area.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the majority of these shells were manufactured in Richmond, VA. This Confederate Coehorn mortar shell has been in Peter's collection for thirty years and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
