This excavated Confederate Read shell base with copper sabot measures approximately 3.6 inches in diameter. It was acquired directly from the digger who hunted various Virginia battle areas within the Shenandoah Valley. It is still in its "as dug" raw state and the copper sabot, with seven lands and grooves, has a very pleasing dusty-green patina. A lathe dimple is present in the bottom of the base. It weighs approximately 2.2 pounds and is approximately 2-1/8 inches in height. There is minor flaking of the iron but is in overall stable condition. This Read shell base will be an excellent educational tool or display piece for any artillery or general relic collection.
