This Confederate six pounder spherical case-shot artillery shell is in very good condition and was recovered from McDowell, VA., also known as Sitlington's Hill. It was acquired directly form the digger and comes with 16 case-shot balls. The iron is in great shape that has only minimal surface build-up with nearly no pitting. Its fuzing system consisted of a wood drive-in fuze adaptor that would have accepted a paper time fuze. Its diameter measures approximately 3.58 inches and it s overall approximate weight is 3.8 pounds. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", its weight of 3.0 pounds, without the case-shot balls, indicates definitively that this ball was manufactured to have case-shot balls in it. This case-shot shell is inert and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
