Confederate Cavalry Spur - Strap Studs and Raking Rowel Type

This cast brass excavated Confederate cavalry spur is the type with a horizontal rowel and strap studs. It is unmarked and its surface has a very pleasing overall dusty green patina. Though a very well-made solid and heavy spur, a portion of its round neck is missing as well as its iron rowel. It measures approximately 3-3/4 inches wide (stud to stud) and 4-3/4 inches long. It was acquired directly from a local Virginia digger who recovered it from a Fluvanna County, VA farm. No cracks or repairs.

Reference: An image and description of a similar Confederate spur is found in the following Civil War spur reference book:

  • "Historic American Spurs" by Howard Crouch, page 58, item CS 15.

See the above pages in the additional images.

The spur was acquired directly from the digger, and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War spur, cavalry, or general relic collection.
