This cast brass excavated Confederate cavalry spur is the type with a beveled curve at the end of the strap plates and a tapered neck. Clearly this spur has that "been there, done that" appearance or it got into a fight with a farmer's plow. Its surface has a very pleasing overall green patina with yellow soil remaining. Its iron rowel is missing and has substantial bending. It was acquired directly from a local Virginia digger who recovered it from Charles City County, VA. While there are edge nicks and a couple of small areas with bright brass showing there are no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Reference: Images and descriptions of somewhat similar Confederate spurs are found in the following Civil War spur reference book:
See the above pages in the additional images.
I have included two examples from the above reference book as both spurs pictured are not exactly identical to the spur offered here. CS 23 spur has the beveled curve at the end of the strap plate, while CS 24 has the tapered neck. The spur offered in this listing was acquired directly from the digger, and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War spur, cavalry, or general relic collection.
