Item: Confederate States Navy Coat Button

Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Design: Crossed cannons with a fouled anchor superimposed, and "C S N" below.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, shank missing. The button has a brown patina with partial gilt remaining. The small hole and surface solder as seen on the rear indicate that the button was altered to become a stick or hat pin after its recovery. The button has no pushes, cracks, or repairs.
Recovered: Marlboro Point, VA area.
Reference: Tice: CSN202A1 Albert: CS 52
Comments:  According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, these buttons "exhibit magnificent handiwork, design, and finish". This Confederate States Navy button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
