This excavated Confederate sword hanger is in very good condition. It is constructed of cast brass which now has a nice dusty brown-green patina and according to the small label it is a Virginia find. The device is slightly bent and there is a small stress break in the brass in the lower "U" portion of the hook. These devices hung from the leather sword belt and were designed to carry the officer's swords. Similar examples of sword hangers, both CS and US, can be found in "Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch on page 207 as #5, also in "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 183 in illustration #8 and in "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865 Supplement I" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 131 in illustration #9. This sword hanger has no repairs will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
