Item: Excavated US eagle plate.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and two iron wire loops.
Condition: Very good, excavated, solid. Its brass face has an even rich brown patina over a well-defined eagle clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. There is a small dented area at the rim edge that was once bent and subsequently re-worked back into place. The rear has a near full complement of smooth solder with both iron attachment loops that are rusty, complete, and nearly straight-up. The plate has no cracks, breaks, or bends.
Recovered: Cold Harbor, VA
Approximate diameter: 65 mm.
Comments: If you are looking for a decent solid example with both loops, good solder, a detailed eagle motif with an even brown patina, then this eagle plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
