Federal Eagle Plate - High Quality

SOLD

Item: Excavated Federal Eagle Plate.
Use: Eagle plates, also known as breast plates, shoulder belt plates, and cross belt plates, were displayed on the belt that held the soldier's cartridge box. They were proudly worn by Union soldiers with the belt slung over the shoulder and across the chest. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and two iron wire loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass face has a base brown patina with a light-yellow layer of encrusted soil nicely high-lighting a well-defined eagle, clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left.  The rear has a near full complement of solder with both iron attachment loops that are solid, complete, and straight-up. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Approximate diameter:
 64 mm.
Recovered: Chancellorsville, VA
Comments:  If you are looking for a high quality eagle plate with a nice excavated look, then this one is for you. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
