Eagle Plate

SOLD

Item: Excavated US eagle plate.
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron wire attachment loops.
Condition:
Good, excavated. Its brass face has a very pleasing emerald green patina that displays a detailed eagle, clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. Just below the eagle's right leg, and also below and to the right of the eagle's head, are rust bumps. These bumps are typically a result of rust leaching into, and sometimes through, the brass from the rear as a result of the rusting of the iron attachment loops and their connecting interior wire. There is a 1/4 inch freeze crack at the 1:30 o'clock position that extends form the rim towards the top of the eagle's left wing. There is a slight upward bend at the 3 o'clock position of the rim. The rear solder is complete and the iron attachment loops are no longer present. The plate has no breaks or repairs.
Recovered:
In the area of Peebles' Farm, Dinwiddie County, VA
Approximate diameter:
 64 mm.
Comments:
This relic was acquired directly from the digger, Robert Braswell, Jr. of Gaston, NC., who recovered many fine relics from both North Carolina and Virginia over several decades. Learn more about Robert and his relic detecting by clicking on his name above. This eagle breast plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
