This exploded musket barrel portion was acquired directly from the digger, Robert Braswell, Jr. of Gaston, NC. It is 9-3/4 inches of the muzzle end of the barrel which still includes its front sight. It was likely the result of some sort of stoppage that prevented the gun's bullet from passing through its muzzle leaving a sizable tear in the side of the barrel. It appears that the end of the barrel was intentionally cut off, likely to allow continued use of the musket. Since the barrel has a layer of rust build-up, along with moderate pitting and a light clear coating, obtaining an accurate measure of the bore at the muzzle is difficult, however the measurement taken was approximately .57 inch. Robert Braswell, Jr. recovered many fine relics from both North Carolina and Virginia over several decades. Learn more about Robert and his years of relic detecting by clicking on his name above. This fine relic will be a very interesting display piece in any excavated Civil War weapon, firearm, or general relic collection.
