Item: Federal 12 Pounder Shell with Bormann Fuze Remnants
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 8 pounds. Diameter: 4.49 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, deactivated. The iron surface is smooth with nearly no pitting. Remnants of the Bormann time-fuze are present. Printed on the shell, by the digger in gold marker, is "MOUNT JACKSON VA". The shell has been deactivated and has no repairs. It has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron and is ready for display.
Recovered: Mount Jackson, VA.
Comments: This shell was acquired directly from the digger. According to the artillery reference book "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Dickey and George, "After April 1862, almost every Federal 12-pounder smoothbore shell fired had a Bormann fuze making this the "most common" explosive shell of the War". This piece of Civil War artillery will be an excellent addition to any artillery or general relic collection.
