Approximate size: Weight: 8.2 pounds. Diameter: 4.51 inches.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, unfired, deactivated. The surface of the shell is smooth with very mild pitting. Its unpunched "single slotted" Bormann time-fuze is present with a couple of numbers and hash-marks still visible. Directly opposite the fuse on the other side of the shell is a drill hole where it was deactivated. It has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron and is ready for display. There are no repairs.  Learn about Bormann time fuzes by clicking the Bormann time fuze link above.
Recovered: Mount Jackson, VA.
Reference: A similar Federal 12-pounder shell with a "single slotted" Bormann fuze, is pictured in the following reference book:

  • "Melton & Pawl's Guide to Civil War Artillery Projectiles", by Jack W. Melton, Jr., and Lawrence E. Pawl, page 32, Fig. III A-10.

See above page in the additional images.

Comments: This shell was acquired directly from the digger. According to the artillery reference book "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", by Dickey and George, "After April 1862, almost every Federal 12-pounder smoothbore shell fired had a Bormann fuze making this the "most common" explosive shell of the War". This piece of Civil War artillery will be an excellent addition to any artillery or general relic collection.
