Item: Federal 3-Inch Schenkl "Case-Shot" Shell with Combination Percussion & Time Fuze
Gun: 3-inch wrought iron (ordnance) rifle.
Fuzing: Zinc Schenkl combination percussion & time, late war pattern.
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 9 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches, Length: 9-3/4 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, stable, deactivated. As dug, still in the rough with no coating. There is a moderate amount of surface build-up and pitting. The fuze is in good condition with raised letters and numbers still visible on the top. On top of the fuze "rotator" along the edge in raised letters is a portion of "PAT JULY 15 / 1862" with "10 SEC" in the center. On the top of the flange a hashmark is still visible. Its papier-mâché sleeve sabot is no longer present as is typical for excavated examples. The hole in the end of the shell, directly opposite the fuze, is where the shell was drilled to remove the powder. No repairs and ready for display.
