Item: Federal 3-Inch Type II Hotchkiss Common Shell - Patent Stamped Base
Gun: 3-inch ordnance rifle.
Construction: Cast iron with lead sabot.
Fuzing: Brass Hotchkiss Type II adaptor for use with a paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 6.2 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 6-3/4 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, fired. The shell's surface is very smooth with minimal pitting. Printed on one side in faded gold marker is "FISHER'S HILL" indicating its recovery location. While the brass fuze adaptor and base cup are present, the lead sabot is not. Approximately 3/4 of the upper wall of the base cup is missing. The bottom of the base cup is stamped "HOTCHKISS PATENT OCTOBER 16, 1855" with some of the letters remaining visible. The digger advised that the base cup, which was recovered within a few feet of the shell, was affixed to the nose stem using epoxy. It has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin so as to preserve the iron. The shell has been deactivated and is ready for display. Other than the above-mentioned base cup attachment, there are no repairs.
Recovered: Fisher's Hill, VA
