Item: Federal Carbine Sling Buckle
Construction: Cast brass with middle bar and rotating tongues.
Use: Fastened the cavalryman's leather sling which carried a carbine.
Condition: Fair, excavated. The buckle, with its overall smooth greenish-brown patina, has several bends. The tang support bar has a break but both tans are present and fixed in place. No cracks or repairs. (see Comments section below)
Recovered: Charles City County, VA.
Approximate size: 51 x 81 mm.
Reference: Similar examples of Federal carbine sling buckles are found in the following Civil War belt plate and relic reference books:
See above pages in the additional images.
Comments: Since the areas of damage to this buckle all show the same even greenish-brown patina, I can only conclude that the damage occurred long ago and very well may be Civil War period damage. This carbine sling buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
