Item: Federal Carbine Sling Buckle with Belt End Brass Tip
Construction: Cast brass with middle bar and rotating tongues.
Use: Fastened the cavalryman's leather sling which carried a carbine.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. The brass buckle has a thick dusty green patina. The frame and tang support bar are solid with minor bending likely from period use. Both of the original rotating belt attachment tongues are present and while one freely rotates, the other does not. Both are secure to the bar. The belt end brass tip is in very good condition with all four belt attachment pins and washers. It is uncertain if the buckle and tip were originally attached to the same belt. Neither the buckle or the tip have any cracks, breaks, or repairs. Its recovery location is unknown.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 52 x 84 mm.

Comments: This carbine buckle and tip will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
