This model 1864 Federal cartridge box, for the .58 caliber Springfield pattern rifle or a rifle by any of the other contract makers of .58 caliber military rifles, is in very good condition. Both box "ears", cartridge tins, and strap roller buckles are all present. A portion of surface leather shows wear with some crazing and cracking. The outer flap is "US" embossed and is also stamped with inspector's mark of "R. WHITE / U.S / ORD.DEPt / SUB INSPECTOR". The rear is also stamped with the manufacturer's mark of "S. H. YOUNG & CO. / NEWARK / N.J." Its outer flap closure strap and brass finial are both present and in good condition. The rear of the box has the belt and shoulder strap loops still intact. These were designed so the box could have been worn on the soldier’s belt or on the sling, whichever the soldier preferred. The interior flaps show some surface cracking but are in overall very good condition. This cartridge box will make an excellent addition to any Civil War accoutrement or general relic collection.
