Federal Cavalry Spur - Cast-in Groove Type with Beveled Edge and File Marks

SOLD

Item: Federal Cavalry Spur - Cast-in Groove Type with Beveled Edge and File Marks
Construction: Solid cast brass.
Approximate size: 3-3/4 x 5-1/8 inches.
Condition: Good, excavated. A solid spur with an overall mottled green patina. File marks are found on the majority of its surface and the edges of the heel bands are uncommonly beveled. Its rowel is no longer present and there is minor bending in the heel bands and neck. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Charlestown, WV area.
Reference:  Similar examples of this spur with cast-in groove are found in the following Civil War reference books:

  • "Historic American Spurs" by Howard Crouch, page 34, item US 3.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War 1861 - 1865" by Stanley S. Phillips, page 74, items 2 & 3.

See above pages in additional images.

Comments: This spur is one of the more interesting excavated examples I have encountered with beveled edges and file marks. According to "Historic American Spurs" by Howard Crouch, on page 34, "About ten percent of these Model 1859 spurs found will be of this variety, having a cast-in groove on the inner heel band. This was done to both strengthen and lighten the spur." This spur will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War spur, Cavalry, or general relic collection.
